Sport-y September

We had a great September! It's a pretty straightforward statement, but it really was an enjoyable month. We rang in September a day early (8/31) at the Hampton Classic, enjoying the Grand Prix from the grandstand. (A bucket list item is to enjoy the Grand Prix under the tent at least once in my life.) After the show we drove into Sag Harbor, picked up some take out seafood, and enjoyed a late lunch by the water. Two days later, we headed to the US Open at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing. We watched the match, Roger Federer verse Roger Bautista Agut, which Roger won (though he was out of the Open entirely a match later, which hard to fathom. The next day Jared headed out to the Mountauk Yacht Club for a retreat with Bechance, and I headed to New Hampshire for Annalisa's Bachelorette Weekend a day after that. (I'm sure we did sport-y things when we were gone too - I know I kayaked!) On Monday, 9/8 I began a NEW JOB (woohoo!!) at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center, part of Mount Sinai Hospital, as a program coordinator, but more on that another time. For now, enjoy our photos from the Hampton Classic and US Open.

And then towards the end of the September, we took the 4 train to the Bronx, to The House That Ruth Built, to help send of the Captain. After nearly 20 years as shortstop with the New York Yankees, Derek Jeter retired. Lifelong Yankee fan, I thought we should be part of the celebration of a model athlete. We scored some nice seats on the field just past third base, and enjoyed the game: a couple of Jeter hits, a cool September night, some hot dogs and beer, and  at the end of the evening Frank Sinatra's New York, New York. I am glad we went at the beginning of the week too, not that we could not have afforded tickets for his last game anyway. The vibe that night was different from what we watched on TV a few days later. I couldn't handle my tears watching the game on television, so taking in the final game live would have been tough. There were many wonderful articles about the impact that Jeter has had on professional sports, and what it means to be a Jeter fan. The best one I read, a blog post written by Jon Gruber, could not have summarized Derek Jeter's time with the Yankees better. Mystique, Aura, and De Ja Vu were alive and well at Yankee Stadium during Jeter's last game, where he had a walk-off hit to win his last ever game. The place went nuts, and it was like the play-offs and World Series games of the lat 90's and early 00's, and it was truly awesome. I am so glad to have known the New York Yankees with Derek Jeter.

Photos of our time at Yankee Stadium are below!
